A Chef's Guide to Eating in London

TV host and cookbook author Judy Joo on London’s best eats, from high-end to late-night.

Judy Joo’s footprint is international. The American-born chef (a former Wall Street trader) has hot restaurants in London and Hong Kong, and her television appearances—on Iron Chef UKand Korean Food Made Simple—can be seen around the world. This month, Joo will release a book, also titled Korean Food Made Simple, which offers 130 of recipes geared toward the home cook. And while Joo admits that her personal favorite recipe in the book is for late-night noodles, even a world-famous chef can’t always eat at home. Here, Joo shares with T&C her favorite spots for a meal in London.

Jinjuu
In addition to my restaurant in Hong Kong, I have two London locations, one in SoHo and one in Mayfair. When I’m at either, I’ll order something comforting like kimchi fried rice and maybe a bibimbap—and always the kimchi, I love it. Usually, I’ll sit at the kitchen bar and be on my laptop, working and eating. Oh, and we have this Korean shaved ice dessert, which is so very tasty. 15 Kingly Street and 39 Albemarle Street.

Scott’s
This is a London institution. It’s a swanky Mayfair place where celebrities hang out, but it also has incredible seafood. Whenever you go to London, you have to have seafood—we’re an island nation!—so I’ll order dover sole and oysters, which is just the best order. It’s also a beautiful room. 20 Mount Street.

Jamavar
This is one of the new Indian restaurants that’s opened in town. The Indian food in London is just fantastic; we have a large Indian population and with that comes great food. Some people even say that England’s national dish is a curry. This place is super authentic food in a gorgeous room, and the chef, Rohit Ghai, has done really inventive things with Indian food. I recommend the fish dishes and biryani, that’s just fantastic. 8 Mount Street.

Homeslice
Behind a New Yorker transplanted to London, I’ve never been able to find good pizza. It’s a tough thing. So, I was thrilled to find Homeslice, which has its own brick oven and makes thin, New York-style pizza. They have innovative toppings, though, like pork with XO sauce and sunflower seeds. It’s my go-to pizza place. 13 Neal's Yard.

Bibendum
This is the new restaurant in the landmark Michelin building in London. It’s just been taken over by a chef named Claude Bosi who does modern French, like sea bream with morels in a coffee-and-tarragon sauce. There’s fine dining, but a café in front as well. 81 Fulham Road.

Maroush
Arabic food is among the most fantastic ethnic cuisines in London. Being on Edgware Road makes you feel like you’re in the Middle East. One of the places that offers the best Arabic food is Maroush. It’s also open super late—there are a few different places all owned by the same people—and they do fantastic shawarma. In London, everybody goes for midnight shawarma. For a posher experience, there’s one on Beauchamp Place in Chelsea, which is open until 3 a.m. That’s where you’ll find me. 21 Edgware Road and 38 Beauchamp Place.
