In his staging of “Imaginarium” for the sixth installment of Art Fair Philippines, sculptor Daniel de la Cruz takes his audience on a sensory exploration through three distinct yet interwoven stories of fantasy, mystery, and illusion. “After 10 years of constantly experimenting with my work, I am now comfortable with who I am as a visual artist. ‘Imaginarium’ is a celebration of life, a way for me to look at things differently, express my own viewpoint, and find beauty and fun in the unexpected,” he shares. De la Cruz starts where he left off with his Alice in Wonderland-inspired show, “Curiouser and Curiouser,” and takes people into the not-so-real world we live in, one where reality is not as it seems but what we make of it. “Although it is not always beautiful and pleasant, we ought to never outgrow our sense of wonderment,” he continues. Keeping to his materials for which he is renowned, he has stretched further his use of metal casting. However, he stresses that each piece still remains a one-off and there is still more hand work involved in each.

With “Imaginarium,” Daniel de la Cruz takes us to a world where reality is not what it seems.

Each of the exhibit’s narratives, Carnevalle, Tales of the Peculiar, and Cabinet of Curiosities, invokes a sense of suspended reality as de la Cruz invites viewers on a fantastical journey— begging them to “anticipate, appreciate, and originate” within a bizarre and curious world. Those who seek hidden truths are rewarded with reverie by an illuminating menagerie and wonders collected from the natural world.
