ABC has released the first footage of The Last Days of JFK Jr., a new documentary airing in January. The two-hour special will explore the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, as they were just before the couple died in a tragic 1999 plane crash.

Using rare footage of John and Carolyn, as well as interviews with several people close to JFK Jr. (his college roommates, assistant, contributors to George, and two ex-girlfriends to name a few), the documentary paints an intimate portrait of John F. Kennedy's first son. Watch the trailer below.

John and Carolyn appeared to be a beautiful, accomplished couple. As writer Michael Gross says in the trailer, "[John] was the last glimmer of fantasy. He was the last prince." Behind the scenes, however, it was far more complicated.

The documentary will explore this in detail. "The ABC News documentary explores not only John’s life, but also the stressors that he was facing in his final days," ABC News wrote in a release, “from apparent turmoil in his marriage to keeping his magazine George afloat."

Much of that stress came from the unrelenting attention from the press. "On the celebrity safari, Kennedy was the lion of the big game hunter," George Rush, a former gossip columnist, told Town & Country. "[John and Carolyn] never grew old."

The Last Days of JFK Jr. will air on ABC on Thursday, January 3 at 9 p.m. EST.
