Even 100 years after the Romanovs' tragic deaths, the world is still interested in their story. And this summer, The Last Czars, a long-awaited Netflix docuseries, will delve into the history of the last imperial dynasty to rule Russia.

According to Deadline, which first broke the news of the series back in 2017, The Last Czars will follow "the fall of the Russian Imperial Romanov family, run by Tsar Nicholas II, who were killed in 1918 following the February Revolution."

The Netflix description puts it in slightly more dramatic terms:

When social upheaval sweeps Russia in the early 20th century, Czar Nicholas II resists change, sparking a revolution and ending a dynasty.

But before you start imagining a Russian version of The Crown or Victoria, this six-episode project from the production company Nutopia, will be a combination of documentary and reenactment, not a purely scripted drama. And the trailer below shows exactly how the two different elements will be incorporated into one show.

Given the fascination with the subject matter, The Last Czars is hardly the only project about Russia's royal family available to stream right now.

For example, Matthew Weiner's miniseries The Romanoffs, which stars Diane Lane, Christina Hendricks, and Corey Stoll, among others, premiered on Amazon Prime in April of 2018 and centers around people who believe themselves to be the modern-day descendants of the Romanov family.

But unlike Weiner's project, which was more an exploration of how the Romanovs have been mythologized in modern popular culture, this new series will focus on exactly what happened to the family, and will feature interviews with historians on the subject.

The Last Czars premieres July 3, only on Netflix.
