Netflix is working with a full staff of creative, visual, and writing teams in order to extend the storylines of the iconic characters further than they are in Dahl's books, but "intends to remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl." There has been no mention as to which of Dahl's stories will be made first, although Netflix announced that production of the first series is set to begin in 2019.
“Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories,” said Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl.
“This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”
Roald Dahl signs books for young fans
According to Deadline, the Roald Dahl partnership is one of the biggest ever in children's' entertainment but is just one of many recent deals in Netflix's family department. The streaming service recently began work on adaptions of classic children's stories such as Pinocchio, The Willoughbys, and Green Eggs and Ham.
The list of Dahl's titles that will be adapted, includes not only favorites like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, and The Twits, but also Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, George's Marvellous Medicine, Boy– Tales of Childhood, Going Solo, The Enormous Crocodile, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, Henry Sugar, Billy and the Minpins, The Magic Finger, Esio Trot, Dirty Beasts, and Rhyme Stew.
