Witherspoon previously described the scene as "one of the top moments of my entire career."

Back in 2018, when Big Little Lies fans were struggling to cope with the long gap between seasons one and two, something magical happened. A sign arrived from the heavens, in the form of a photograph. It showed Reese Witherspoon hurling a huge ice cream cone at Meryl Streep—and in an instant, dispelled any doubts that season two would be worth the wait.

Then, the unthinkable happened. After five excellent episodes from Big Little Lies's sophomore run, fans had been given plenty to talk about—Renata kicking her husband out on the side of the highway! Celeste slapping Mary Louise!—but something was missing. There was an ice cream cone-shaped hole in the plot.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the scene was shot for Sunday night's episode, but was left on the cutting room floor. Thankfully, though, Meryl Streep wasn't pelted with a frozen dessert for nothing—fans will just have to work a little harder to see the clip. "[Reese] just told me it's not in the show!" Streep told ET back at the Big Little Lies premiere. "It's [going to be] in the DVD extras."

The few seconds of tape should be worth the extra effort, if Witherspoon's description of it is accurate. "I think it's one of the top moments of my entire career," Witherspoon on Good Morning America, in September 2018. "For real... And I hit her! Like, I nailed it! She turned around and she was like, 'Yeah you got me.'"

Witherspoon clearly understood the gravity of the situation last night, when viewers were grieving the lost scene on Twitter. She quoted a fan's tweet, which read "We'll always have these pictures of Reese Witherspoon throwing ice cream at Meryl Streep," then added her own message: "And I will always share these memories with you all."
