The Oscars Likely Won't Have a Host for the First Time Since 1989

In the wake of Kevin Hart's departure—necessitated by a backlash against the comedian's resurfaced homophobic tweets—the Oscars have reportedly decided to forgo a host entirely.

Variety broke the news yesterday morning. The magazine's sources explained that the Academy plans instead to stack the broadcast with a series of A-list presenters. One focus will reportedly be on the year's stacked "Best Original Song" category, as Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, and Kendrick Lamar seem to be shoo-ins for nominations.

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, there's another hyped-up corner of film that the Academy hopes to tap: the ever-expanding Marvel cinematic universe. Producers hope to cram as many stars from the Avengers franchise onstage as possible, although a list of actors has yet to be finalized. As THR points out, the Oscars are broadcasted on ABC, which like Marvel is owned by Disney—so this plan could be a win for all involved.

The producers of the 91st Oscars ceremony, Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss, have exactly one previous hostless Academy Awards to look to for inspiration: the 1989 Oscars. Audiences have yet to forgive Rob Lowe for the results, which included his bizarre duet with Snow White. The New York Times subsequently declared the musical to deserve "a permanent place in the annals of Oscar embarrassments."

For his part, Lowe had only this to say: "I was a good soldier and did it." Let's hope that none of the Avengers will have to utter those words in the aftermath of this year's ceremony.
