Moscow Ballet's La Classique and Bolshoi Ballet Stars to Stage Swan Lake in Manila
For many, Peter Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is their introduction to watching classical ballet. The score, the original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and the tragic romance between Prince Siegfried and his Swan Queen have never failed to leave a lasting impression on its audiences.
From June 14 to 22, balletomanes will get the chance to revisit the iconic ballet when visiting company Moscow Ballet stages the performance at the New Frontier Theater in Araneta Center, Quezon City. The Russian ballet company’s classical choreography arm “La Classique” had enlisted the talents of Bolshoi Theater principal dancers Nina Kaptsova and Alexander Volchkov for its Manila run.
Adding to the grandeur of the affair, La Classique’s production will be accompanied by live music from the Russian Symphony Orchestra, under the helm of conductor Yaroslav Tkalenko.
Apart from Swan Lake, La Classique has staged ballets such as Giselle, Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Romeo & Juliet, and Sleeping Beauty, among others in its repertoire. The company was founded in 1990, by the Union of the Theatre Activists of the USSR. For nearly three decades, it has gained recognition in a destination known for this performance art form. It has also enjoyed successful tours around France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, and other various countries.
Starring in the ballet, Kaptsova and Volchkov are two seasoned dancers from one of Russia’s greatest cultural attractions, the Bolshoi Theatre. Apart from the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, this Moscow-based theater is lauded as one of the premier destinations to watch a ballet.
The Bolshoi Ballet Company is also one of the two most competitive companies in the Russia. The svelte Kaptsova has been a member of Bolshoi since 1996, initially being casted as minor characters. Eventually, she danced her way up the ranks to soloist and now, principal dancer. Meanwhile, Volchkov entered the company a year later than his fellow principal dancer. Back in 1998, he played the part of a friend to the Prince, but in 2005, he took the lead role of Siegfried in Swan Lake under a Yuri Grigorovich production.
