I don't know why anyone would ever want to put another adaptation of Little Women into the universe since the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder, Kristen Dunst, Claire Danes, and Christian Bale is perfection, as evidenced by the very old-school trailer below:

But if you're going to make a new film version of Louisa May Alcott's iconic 1869 novel, getting the Ladybird crew back together isn't such a bad place to start.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Greta Gerwig will direct the upcoming project. Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are in talks to star (as Jo and Laurie, one would assume), as are Laura Dern, Meryl Steep, and Florence Pugh. While Emma Stone was originally tied to the project, she has since dropped out, and Emma Watson will take her place. It's unclear at this point who is in the running to play Beth, the shy March sister who—is it really a spoiler if the book's been out for 150 years?—suffers from scarlet fever.

In July, Robin Swicord, who wrote the 1994 version and is a producer of Gerwig's adaptation, confirmed the casting news and told the Los Angeles Times that Streep, who also has a starring role in the next season of Big Little Lies, will not be playing matriarch Marmee, as most of us assumed. Perhaps that part belongs to Dern.

“Meryl Streep gets to play any part she wants to play,” said Swicord.

It turns out that part is Josephine March, the sisters' wealthy aunt. She hasn't been a central character in previous versions but Swicord says Gerwig’s film will focus more on the March sisters’ lives after they leave home. “It’s really taking a look at what it is for a young woman to enter the adult world,” Swicord says. The screenplay will apparently move back and forth in time.

Swicord says filming will begin in Boston in October and they plan to release the film a year later.

Little Women is having something of a cultural renaissance as of late. A mini-series adaptation starring Angela Lansbury as Aunt March and Maya Hawke as Jo ran on Masterpiece PBS this spring. And a modern retelling of the story starring Lea Thompson is expected to debut in theaters later this fall. Watch the trailer for that film here:
