Idris Elba Weighs in on Rumors That He'll Be the Next James Bond

It's still unclear if he'll play 007.

Over the weekend actor Idris Elba took to social media to address the rumors that he might be the next James Bond. On Sunday morning, Elba posted a series of photos on his Twitter account igniting the conversation over whether or not he'll star as the iconic character.

In his first tweet on the topic, Elba shared a grainy photo of himself with the caption, "my name's Elba, Idris Elba," and his fans immediately responded. Wanting to see Elba play the role of Bond, people replied to the post, leaving comments like "Oh please God YESSSSS!!!" and "He better not be teasing us!"

But just a few hours later, the Luther star shared a black and white photo of Public Enemy just a minute before posting another tweet that reads, "Don't believe the HYPE...," which is one of the hip hop group's most popular songs.

It's still unclear if that was his way of saying that the speculation is untrue.

Last week, the U.K.'s Daily Star reported that Barbara Broccoli, producer of previous James Bond films, said “it is time” for a nonwhite actor to take the lead as the spy. According to the tabloid, director Antoine Fuqua told Broccoli that Elba would be a good choice for the role. "Idris could do it if he was in shape," Fuqua reportedly said. "You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

But later, a representative for Fuqua denied the conversation ever happened, tellingthe Hollywood Reporter, "[Fuqua] never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting. It’s all made-up stuff. Not sure how it got started."

With so much conflicting information out there, at this point, it's anyone's guess whether or not Elba will ever star as the British Secret Service agent, but we're certainly keeping our fingers crossed.
