On the heels of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, yet another musical legend is set to get the biopic treatment. Elvis Presley's story will be told by Baz Luhrmann, the director known for his stylized work on Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby. Here, all the details we've learned thus far about the upcoming film.

AUSTIN BUTLER WILL PLAY THE LEAD ROLE.

After a five-actor run-off for the part, Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood, The Dead Don't Die) emerged victorious—beating out Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and others to play Elvis.

Luhrmann explained his choice in a statement, per Variety. "I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in ‘The Iceman Cometh’ on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures."

BUTLER'S STARRING OPPOSITE A HOLLYWOOD VETERAN.

Tom Hanks has already been cast as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager. The crux of the film, co-written by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, focuses on the relationship between Presley and Parker. As a manager, Parker helped build Elvis's career from nothing—but was also said to be extremely controlling, and according to Deadline, rumor has it that Parker took half of Elvis's earnings home himself.

IT'S A LONG TIME IN THE MAKING.

According to the Wrap, Luhrmann has been developing the project with his wife (and frequent creative collaborator) Catherine Martin since filming finished on 2013's The Great Gatsby. The pair are set to co-produce the Elvis biopic.
