Even in the era of "peak TV," precious few television shows foster the necessary fan base for resurrection—and Downton Abbey is among them. After six beloved seasons, the Crawleys are back for a feature-length film.

This morning, Focus Features released the first trailer for the movie. The preview sets up the film's central narrative. The movie will pick up the Downton characters' story in the fall of 1927, when they're being visited by King George V and Queen Mary. But time has continued to march on, and brought some change with it—as one character exclaims, "It's 1927, we're modern folk!"

As filming wrapped in November, though, the cast and crew know exactly what's in store. Elizabeth McGovern—or as Downton fans know her, Cora Crawley—gave Town & Country a vague idea of what fans can expect.

"I feel like the movie looks at all the characters with a really affectionate lens. In the way it’s written, there’s almost a nostalgia for all the characters," she said. "And I felt that myself, seeing everybody again in the costumes, and the things that they would say, hearing them again. It was a really nice little gift to be able to participate in it."

A newly unveiled poster for the Downton Abbey movie

Laura Carmichael, the actress behind Lady Edith Crawley, thinks Downton devotees will be pleased. "I think everyone will be pleased. We've upped the ante, it's like turning the volume up," she said in February.

Downton Abbey will premiere on September. In the meantime, there are still six great seasons to re-watch.
