“Alice It Isn’t Real,” ongoing at Pablo Gallery in Taguig, is contemporary artist Tin F. Garcia’s attempt to explain the “senseless series of events happening in the country—and elsewhere in the world.” For this one-woman show, Garcia was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the children’s classic famous for its peculiar characters and confusing word and logic puzzles.

The title of the show appears to come from the book’s sequel, Through the Looking Glass, where Alice debates with Tweedledum and Tweedledee about the reality of her existence after they tell her she’s just a figure in another person’s dream. It’s a feeling people the world over can relate to as we seem to be caught in a never-ending nightmare of unnerving current events.

Garcia, who earned her Fine Arts degree at the University of the Philippines in 1999, says, “Real life has taken a surreal turn; it seemed only natural to create paintings that reflect the absurdity of the times… I imagined these scenes through an Alice lens, as if to consciously not make sense of them I decided to add a sculptural element with the shaped canvases, if only to anchor these scenes to something familiar, comforting, and physical.”

Runs until July 22, C-11 South of Market, Bonifacio Global City; 877.6284, 0917.579.9261; [email protected]; tinfgarcia.wordpress.com.
