Excitement is already building around Kevin Kwan's forthcoming comedy series—largely because it sounds a bit like Crazy Rich Asians: American Style.

The show, titled The Emperor of Malibu, follows two well-off families: one with new money from Shanghai and one long-established East Coast clan. When their children get married, they have to learn to get along.

CBS, clearly hoping to jump on the monster success of Crazy Rich Asians, has ordered a pilot from Kwan. 2 Broke Girls executive producer Michelle Nader will supervise, as will David Sangalli—the latter of which is also involved in Kwan's forthcoming Amazon series. That show also sounds a bit like Kwan's best-selling book, which centers on a rich and powerful family in Singapore. And while CBS is only signed on for a pilot, Amazon is on board for a whole season.

So yeah, Kwan has a pretty stacked slate of projects. And that's not to mention the sequel for Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kwan's novel China Rich Girlfriend. Plus, there could be even more films in the works, as Warner Brothers reportedly wants to turn the blockbuster movie into a "big-screen franchise." There are three books in the Crazy Rich Asians series, after all.

All this to say that when something takes off, Hollywood is more than eager to replicate it (see: the unending Marvel universe). But when that first success is with something as culturally meaningful—and actually good—as Crazy Rich Asians, audiences are more than happy to eat up the spin-offs.
