The Monterey Five Finally Let Meryl Streep into the Big Little Lies Group Chat
This week on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Laura Dern, who plays the oh-so-quotable Renata on the popular HBO series, revealed that the show's main cast members started a text thread last season, and as we approach the finale of season two, "it's going strong."
The chat includes Dern and her co-stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, but it's apparently a "no boys allowed" zone.
"There are no men in our equation," Nicole Kidman explained to Vanity Fair back in April. "I mean, there are, but they’re not on the group chat, let’s put it that way."
The chat used to be nameless, just "five different area codes," as Dern put it, but now, it uses the same moniker as the women on the show: "The Monterey Five."
And when Meryl Streep joined the cast this season, she wanted in. But Streep plays Mary Louise Wright, the grieving mother of Perry, Celeste's deceased husband and her character is most definitely not a member of the Monterey Five.
"Then this other woman, like, wants to join the text. I'm like, Meryl, okay, we have our own group text! It's a little rude," Dern said jokingly.
"Of course she writes the most genius thing ever, inspires us to become better people, and we're like 'Okay, you can be in our text.'"
What Streep said is a mystery, but Dern did offer a window into some of the subject matter that gets discussed by the women: Snacks, snacks, and more snacks. Which, if I'm being honest, looks a lot like the group chats on my phone.
"Periodically I'm asking them about the best mint, or like, what's a good snack to eat when you feel exhausted on set," said Dern.
"Then Nicole [Kidman] taught me about apple with cinnamon, and it has changed my life."
