Now available on Netflix, the first season of The Crown follows a young Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) and her early days as Queen. But future seasons will see Foy replaced with an older actress, as the series explores Elizabeth II's later years.

Series producer Andrew Eaton has revealed that the drama will eventually head into the '70s, '80s and '90s to explore the Queen's relationship with Princess Diana.

"You know what the journey is, so [series creator] Peter Morgan was able to map out what happens," Eaton said. "There's a lot of great stuff that happens in season two [now filming].

"Then, once you start that journey, you start thinking, 'God, won't it be great when we get to Princess Diana?' So there's plenty of material."

Eaton added that there have been "conversations" about who might star in future seasons of The Crown, but there's no definite word on who will replace Foy or play Diana.

Matt Smith will appear opposite Foy in the first two seasons as Prince Philip, though Eaton has revealed that the former Doctor Who star was initially wary of taking on another long-running TV gig.

"He wasn't sure, because he'd done Doctor Who for so long. He was wary about committing to a show that would take up quite a lot of his time and restrict him from doing other things."

Smith though, like Foy, was producers' top pick to lead the first version of the show.

All 10 episodes of The Crown are now available to stream exclusively on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
