This weekend, the Design and Textile Museum will be transformed into a vibrant world of punk rock, bold colors and loud patterns to reflect the eclectic designs of Anna Sui. The exhibition, which is the museum’s first ever retrospective of an American designer, will explore Sui’s vast career in fashion, cosmetics, and interiors.

At a special event earlier this week, Sui spoke with London College of Fashion’s Professor Frances Corner about what to expect from the exhibition, which features myriad reference points that have inspired her many collections, including stills from Ossie Clark fashion shows and literature from Rolling Stone concerts.

She told Corner: “As a kid, I would collect all the photographs and magazine tear sheets and TV guide covers of things that I love. All these things accumulated in my mind and became what I envisioned fashion to be.”

Sui’s inspiration boards are displayed throughout the exhibition, illustrating the creative journey that every project takes her on. “To discipline everyone they have to see the inspiration of the season,” she explained. “All of the pictures are selected in such a way that people can see the colour story.”

Sui admitted that communicating her vision, can be a challenge, as her ideas can often be hard to pin down. She said: “My world inspires my work, so everything that I’m inspired by still gets filtered through my crazy brain, my crazy world.”

Those entering Anna Sui’s wonderfully wacky universe can expect to see more than 100 designs spanning her 30-year career, alongside accessories, cosmetic collections, and interior design.

‘The World of Anna Sui’ is at the London Fashion and Textile Museum from 26 May to 1 October.
