Moms: they really do it all. From getting their little ones up in the morning to tucking them in at night, mothers are there every step of the way. This year, skip the Hallmark-style platitudes and thank your mom with a truly thoughtful Mother's Day card. Below, five ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

(Heads up: these pointers will also work if your Mother's Day card is addressed to your wife, grandmother, friend, or anyone else!)

TRY TO REMEMBER A TIME WHEN YOUR MOTHER DID SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR YOU.

Granted, mothers are constantly selfless. They can be counted on to give their kids the last bite, even though they really want it, or to carry everyone's stuff around all day, toting around what must be half their weight in bags. But try to pinpoint a moment when she went above and beyond—and remind her just how much it meant to you.

THANK HER FOR WHAT SHE TAUGHT YOU.

Moms teach their children everything, from how to care for others, to the best way to load a dishwasher. Use your card to list off of some of her most useful lessons, and maybe even explain just how they've helped you.

A handmade card makes the message inside even more special.

EXPRESS YOUR GRATITUDE FOR HER SACRIFICES.

You wouldn't be here at all—let alone where you've managed to go—without your mother. Take some time to thank her for all she did, just to get you where you wanted to be.

RECALL A DAY WHEN YOU DID SOMETHING FUN WITH YOUR MOM.

It could be as simple as a memorable stop at the grocery store, or as elaborate as an overseas vacation. Write down how you remember it went, and then add how great it was to spend that time with her.

WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING SHE DID BEFORE YOU WERE BORN.

Everyone has a few good family stories in their back pocket—why not bust one out for Mother's Day? Tell your mom why this particular tale says so much about who she is, and why you love her for it.
