How Vanessa Kirby Almost Lost the Role of Princess Margaret in The Crown

It all had to do with her self tanner.

It's hard to imagine anyone other than Vanessa Kirby playing a young Princess Margaret in seasons one and two of The Crown. She captured the rebellious, heartbroken royal in an incredible performance, but she almost lost the role because of a self-tanning incident.

In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Kirby details exactly how her orange ankles almost changed the casting of The Crown.

"I had quite a strange screen test. I nearly ruined it for myself," she tells Meyers before launching into the beauty nightmare. It had been Kirby's birthday, and in order to cover up her very pale legs, she put some of her sister's self-tanner on her legs.

"I did a double take in the mirror and I thought, 'Oh, my ankles looks so pale.' And it was, like, a summer's day. So I sort of whacked on some, like, instant, sort of, fake tan I found in my sister's drawer," she explained.

Later on, when she went to her screen test for the Netflix series, she changed into some vintage-inspired clothes and "just forgot about the ankles."

"I walked into my screen test, and all four of the directors and Peter Morgan, the creator, just went straight to my ankles. Because I was wearing this skirt, and they were looking at them for about ten minutes," she continued.

"Eventually Peter said, 'Look, what has happened to your legs?' And it was a fast-developing, very strong, kind of, industrial fake tan."

Apparently, Peter Morgan even said it nearly cost her the job. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

While Kirby managed to overcome the self-tanner debacle, she still won't be in season 3 of the show. The entire cast is being replaced as the characters age, with Helena Bonham-Carter playing the Queen's sister. Netflix just recently announced that news, but Kirby let it leak with an Instagram post simply captioned "honoured" months ago.
