What does it take to write an American classic?
New film Rebel in the Rye wants to tell the story behind the story of Holden Caulfield.
Written and directed by Danny Storm (of Gilmore Girls and Empire acclaim), the film will follow Salinger's early life, including his time deployed in France during World War II, and the events that lead to the now-iconic Catcher in the Rye.
Nicholas Hoult (with a fairly convincing accent) plays the controversial literary icon, and Kevin Spacey portrays his mentor Whit Burnett. Sarah Paulson and Victor Garber also appear in the film as Salinger's agent and his disapproving father.
