In recent years, Masterpiece on PBS has earned acclaim for period dramas like Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, and Poldark. But in the case of its latest project, the truth is more compelling than fiction.

To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters tells the story of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë, three sisters who triumphed against the sexist cultural norms of 19th-century England to publish some of the most beloved novels of all time: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and the lesser-known, but no less significant, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, all of which they did under male pseudonyms.

"What author would be without the advantage of being able to walk invisible?" Charlotte wrote her publisher, seemingly unfazed by her lack of renown. "One is thereby enabled to keep such a quiet mind."

The show was filmed in Haworth, Yorkshire village, which has become something of a destination for Brontë scholars and fans, and the script is primarily based on Charlotte's letters. It follows the sisters over the course of three eventful years, that saw the sisters "rise from ordinary, unmarried women, taking care of the household and their widowed father, to the secret authors of the world's most sensational literature," according to Masterpiece.
