WATCH: Lea Salonga is Awkwardly Introduced as Environmental Advocate on U.K. Show
Exactly 30 years after Miss Saigon debuted in the U.K., singer and actor Lea Salonga was welcomed back with her first U.K. concert tour. She was, however, not introduced as the Filipino singer-actress we know her to be.
In an awkward case of mixing up guests, British anchor Stephen Dixon of Sky News morning show Sunrise mistakenly introduced Salonga as environmental campaigner Anna Hughes on its July 5 episode.
With a confused look, Salonga immediately corrected Dixon. “I am not Anna Hughes, I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s going on,” she said before laughing. “No, I’m not Anna Hughes, sorry about that.”
Dixon and his co-anchor, Gillian Joseph, were quickly taken back and realized the mix-up, as Dixon apologized and confirmed if she was Salonga while Joseph lowered her head to her palm in embarrassment.
After returning from a break, Dixon started with “We are mortified,” and continued to correctly introduce Salonga for her successes in Miss Saigon and as the singing voice of two Disney Princesses.
Salonga is known for her role of Kim on Miss Saigon at age 18, in which she won an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. The child prodigy has been in the industry for decades and is no stranger to international press tours, so she helped eliminate the awkwardness by going along with the humor.
