Rather than kicking off the final season off with a lot of action and the battle scenes Game of Thrones is known for, the first episode of the final season focused on the important meetings of several characters, laying the groundwork for what's to come in Westeros. Some met for the first time, some reunited after a very, very long time, and all these key moments will shape the narrative of the upcoming episodes. Here, we ranked the reunions from the expected to the most jaw-dropping.

10. Cersei Lannister and Harry Strickland

The Queen of the Seven Kingdoms finally meets the captain of The Golden Company, Harry Strickland, only to be somewhat disappointed when she learns that the company's famed war elephants were not included in the shipment from Essos. But Cersei doesn't have time to be choosy, after all, she still got 20,000 foot soldiers and 2,000 horses from Strickland. It is still a formidable number, and still presents a huge threat to Jon and Daenery's forces, if she finds an opportunity to break her promise and turn against them.

9. Daenerys Targaryen and Sansa Stark

Of course we knew there was going to be tension between these two. One of the many things Game of Thrones is very effective in doing is creating rivalry between strong female characters. The first meeting of Daenerys and Sansa is no exception. Both have a similar arc and character progression throughout the series. They were young damsels in distress in the earlier seasons, who progressed to become leaders (and queens) amid the many traumatic experiences they went through. It was clear from this meeting that Sansa doesn't like nor trust Daenerys. She is only willing to reconsider because of her brother Jon Snow. We'll have to wait and see how Sansa's relationship with Daenerys will progress throughout the season.

8. Yara Greyjoy and Theon Greyjoy

Theon is finally able to rescue his sister from their uncle Euron's captivity. While Yara suggests going back to the Iron Islands to prepare their stronghold in case Westeros gets overrun, Theon wants to sail north and join the fight against the White Walkers.

7. Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister

A brief reminder on how Sansa and Tyrion got (illegally) hitched: Arya was supposed to marry then-King Joffrey Lannister, but the wedding was called off when Ned Stark was executed. Cersei uncovered a plot of having Sansa marry a Tyrell, so she forced the eldest Stark daughter to marry Tyrion instead. The last time we saw these two together was during Joffrey's wedding ceremony, where he died and Sansa fled from King's Landing in the aftermath. So when Tyrion finally reunites with Sansa in Winterfell, he has nothing but respect for the young Lady Stark and how powerful she has become.

6. Bran Stark and Jon Snow

This is a heartwarming scene. The brothers haven't seen each other in what seems like ages, prompting Jon to kiss and embrace Bran upon seeing him at his arrival in Winterfell. "Look at you," he says. "You're a man."

As the new Three-Eyed Raven "who knows everything," Bran also makes it a point to let his brother Jon learn about his true heritage with the help of Samwell Tarly.

5. Daenerys Targaryen and Samwell Tarly

Upon hearing the news of Ser Jorah's miracle cure from greyscale, Daenerys takes the time to finally meet Samwell Tarly. But what starts out as common courtesy and excitement for Samwell quickly escalates into shock and sorrow, when he learns from the Mother of Dragons that his father and brother were executed under her command for not bending the knee. Sam is clearly distraught by the news, and tells Jon Snow about it before revealing to him what we’ve long been waiting to unravel.

4. Arya Stark and Gendry/ The Hound

Gendry and The Hound are two of Arya's earliest and most important friends. Their meeting is short, but it wouldn't be a proper reunion with Arya if it weren't for the Stark lady asking his blacksmith friend, Gendry, to forge her a mystery weapon. As to what role the weapon she requested for will play in the succeeding episodes remains to be seen. But some eagle-eyed fans point out the tip of the weapon is dragonglass, so if anything, it will almost certainly be used against a white walker.

Meanwhile, the Hound expresses his anger at Arya for leaving him for dead after being beaten up by Brienne of Tarth. "You left me to die," the Hound says. "First, I robbed you," Arya replies. "You're a cold little bitch, aren't you. Guess that's why you're still alive," retorts the Hound. We can't wait for these frienemies to kiss and make up.

3. Jon Snow and Arya Stark

Arya and Jon share the deepest connection among all the Stark siblings, yet have been separated since Season 1 (almost a decade ago). What makes this reunion important and also quite unsettling is when Arya reminds Jon to be loyal to their family. This alludes to a possible plot-twist: Jon Snow choosing between his Stark family or his Targaryen love in the future.

2. Jaime Lannister and Bran Stark

One of the most highly anticipated meetings in the entirety of GoT is already a product of many internet memes. We all know Jaime pushed Bran off the highest tower of Winterfell in Season 1, after Bran caught him and his sister Cersei Lannister having some intimate moments. This is the first time they're meeting after that, making this scene the most tension-filled reunion in the episode. Bran knows what Jaime did, and Jaime is clearly spooked by Bran's glassy, empty stare. Bran definitely knows all of Jaime's secrets, and viewers have yet to see how Bran will leverage what he knows against the Kingslayer.

1. Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly

Distraught by what the Mother of Dragons has done to his father and brother, Sam is keen to let Jon Snow know about what Danaerys is capable of doing to those who refuse to bend the knee. But that’s not the bombshell revelation. It’s what Bran has also convinced him to finally reveal to Jon Snow: 1) that he is not a bastard because 2) he is really Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, 3) true heir to the throne, which in turn means 4) he just made love with his aunt (Daenerys). Bran has long had the vision of this truth, but Samwell's evidence proves to have more weight since he has the physical copy of the diary of the High Septon, who officiated the marriage of Jon's parents. Boom. Jon Snow now knows what we know—(almost) everything.
