At Artisan Cellar Door in Makati, the proposition is simple: Choose your bottle from a vast selection of the world’s best wine, have it opened and poured by your personal WSET 2-certified wine specialist, and enjoy it with fresh cheese and charcuterie while unwinding on one of the comfortable sofas and chairs, or even at the elegant bar. Before you go home, select a few bottles to take along with you and perhaps a few steaks, some of the very best on the market, to throw on the grill.
The offering at Artisan Cellars and Fine Foods’ retail store is both impressive and intimate. “We select premium brands and boutique wineries that are good value for money. Our portfolio is a balance of both,” says Roxanne Lee, one of the partners behind the enterprise. “With the exception of the Bordeaux grand cru wines, which are all available on the open market, all other bottles carried are exclusive to us. We want to offer wine drinkers—from the novice to the seasoned collector—a wonderful drinking experience that would suit every budget or occasion.” The largest exclusive brand found here is by Domaine Baron Rothschild, owners of the classified first growth Chateau Lafite, as well as Chateau L’Evangile and Chateau Rieussec. The exclusive DBR collection includes Lafite Legende, Chateau Aussieres, the Chilean wine Los Vascos, and Bodega Caro from Argentina, a joint venture between Catena and Rothschild.
Other noteworthy French wineries represented are Domaine Leroy, De Montille, and Lucien Lemoine from Burgundy; St. Cosme, Domaine des Remizieres and Yann Chave from the Rhone Valley; and Domaine Schlumberger, the award-winning Alsatian producer. The extensive selection is not limited to French bottles, however, and fine Italian wines are represented. Among them are Valdicava and Siro Pacenti from Brunello; Super Tuscans Sette Ponti and Petrolo; Chianti superstar Castello di Monsanto; and Piedmont’s Barolos: Luciano Sandrone, Elio Altare, and Domenico Clerico.
Also available are McGuigan wines from Australia and a range from Vina Alicia, a prestigious boutique winery owned by the Arizu, one of the best winemakers in Argentina. For those who can’t live without their bubbly, there is a wonderful selection of growers champagnes such as Gosset, Larmandier Bernier, Soutiran, and Besserat de Bellefon, and—according to Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine—the best Italian prosecco, Ruggeri.
In addition to the wines, the store also carries prime cuts of beef from around the world including Australia’s Blackmore Wagyu—the best wagyu in the world, according to Thomas Keller of French Laundry and Per Se, Neil Perry of Rockpool, and Heston Blumenthal of the Fat Duck—and Mayura Station Wagyu, which is found in the kitchens of 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana in Hong Kong and Burnt Ends in Singapore. Also exclusive to the store are the famed 5J Cinco Jotas Jamon Iberico and an assortment of fine cheese.
