These Drinks Are Most Likely to Give You a Terrible Hangover

When choosing what to drink, we most often consider what we're in the mood for, but we might choose differently if we knew that certain alcohols cause less severe hangovers.

If you're trying to avoid a killer headache in the morning, ask your bartender for vodka. (And maybe skip the 3 a.m. rave.)

"Vodka has the least 'hangover causing' toxins... compared to other dark liquors like scotch and whisky," Inoue told news.com.au. Inoue also recommends the age-old tactic of drinking water in between alcoholic beverages, since dehydration is the cause of many a hangover headache.

"Preservatives in wine called sulfites and congeners in spirit are chemical compounds you need to watch out for," Inoue said. Drinks like red wine, brandy, and whisky all contain congeners that exacerbate a hangover by messing with your body's PH levels.

A large amount of methanol can also be a morning buzzkill, according to Roger Corder, author of the Wine Diet and Professor of Barts and the London School of Medicine. "It just washes round in your body until it is eventually converted to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are neurotoxins," he told The Guardian.

And be careful of champagne. The carbon dioxide used to create those fun bubbles also make your bloodstream absorb the alcohol more quickly.

"You get a faster rate of absorption, higher blood alcohol levels — and brain levels — if you drink champagne as opposed to something non-carbonated," said Boris Tabakoff, pharmacology professor at the University of Colorado.

"Around two thirds of people get drunker faster when they drink champagne, or other carbonated drinks like Prosecco or Cava."

Cheers!
