Unveiled earlier this year at the North American international Auto Show, the confidently stylish and sporty 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is now available to the public. Though the E-Class designation only became official in 1993, Mercedes-Benz has been making executive saloons since 1953. Since then, Mercedes-Benz has consistently engineered cars to move the human spirit, with launches that include the ruggedly luxurious G-Class SUVs, the sporty CLS-Series, and the sprightly A-Class.

Now accompanying that list of legendary cars is the 10th generation E-Class. Think of this newest saloon as an eager grandson: tougher and eager to prove itself to the world. When it comes to safety, the car is simply in a class of its own.

The new Mercedes-Benz prevents accidents with its new feature, Attention  Assist, which can detect a driver’s inattentiveness or drowsiness, and helps correct their driving. Another highlight of the Driver Assistance package is the Drive Pilot, which is a bold new step to autonomous driving. Along with basic cruise control and steering assistance, Drive Pilot has features including Active Lane Change Assist, which automatically makes the car switch lanes upon your signal; Speed Limit Pilot, which reads signs and adjusts your speed automatically; and Active Emergency Stop, which brings the car to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

Depending on your needs, the E-Class can be powered by a variety of engines: a four- or six-cylinder gasoline engine, a four-cylinder diesel, or the all-new hybrid power train, codenamed 350e. This hybrid technology impresses even the most discerning driver with its dynamism and efficiency, allowing nearly 30 kilometers of purely electric and therefore locally emission-free driving, before the fourcylinder engine engages.

The E-Class also joins the modern age by coming equipped with touch controls on the steering wheel for the first time. Designed like a smartphone interface, the new wheel ensures that operating the car’s various features will be as easy as using your mobile phone. Naturally, one of the most important things about a business sedan is the comfort it offers. The saloon comes with a standard steel spring suspension, and allows the driver to choose between either Comfort or Sport suspension. An optional upgrade is the highly sensitive and fast-responding Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension feature, which allows for an all-around comfortable ride even with the vehicle loaded. With this package, one can select four different Air Body Control modes: Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Sport+.

The tough and rigid body of the new E-Class forms the basis for exceptional handling, low noise and vibration levels, and a high level of crash safety. Mercedes-Benz engineers opted for a body shell that had a dramatically higher proportion of aluminum and ultra-high-strength steel components than its predecessor. This innovative lightweight design reduces fuel consumption and allows tangibly sporty and agile handling.

But perhaps the best part comes at your journey’s end. With the Remote Parking Pilot, getting into tight parking spaces is easy. Controlled by a smartphone app, you can hop out of the car and squeeze it into spaces you’d never think possible.
