Coffee tables are the natural focal point of the living room given that they are usually located in the center of the living area. While they are usually low enough for unobstructed conversations over afternoon tea or coffee, they are also adequately spacious to accommodate décor, magazines, and books. Here are some ideas when choosing or styling your coffee table.

Layer with ornaments

Top your coffee table with books, table décor, and other curios to give character to the furniture piece. Incorporate pieces that resonate your personality like travel mementos or ornaments that exhibit your style. If you plan on filling up your coffee table with these elements, use a tray or two to avoid a cluttered look. Aside from layering ornaments, you can also use two cocktail tables for added texture.

Complement your furniture

If you're still looking for a coffee table to complete the ensemble of your living room, the fool-proof approach is to choose one that can complement the style of the furniture pieces you already have and then style it to make it look exceptional. But if you are looking for a piece de resistance, go for a table that will stand out from the seating pieces like this fun, metallic Carambole cocktail table by Sacha Lakic for Roche Bobois.

Make use of foliage and flora

Nothing brightens a space more than a bunch of flowers on a vase. To highlight bright blooms, choose a smooth or fine-textured neutral shade vases. Not a fan of flora? Try a handful of leaves like the Philodendron variety or ferns for a tropical vibe, or the fragrant eucalyptus for a more global feel. Don't forget to change the water every other day for the flowers and foliage to last longer. However, if tending fresh blooms is not your cup of tea, you may also opt for sculptural pieces resembling flowers and foliage.

Remember: less is more

One of the pioneers for modernist architecture, German-American architect Mies van de Rohe used the phrase "less is more" to imply there is elegance and sophistication when designing with simplicity and extreme clarity. A large singular piece of table décor or an eye-catching sculpture to serve as a conversation piece will have a big impact on a modern minimalist-themed living room. Pairing a streamlined table with a printed rug will also make a statement.

Find a coffee table that serves multiple purposes

For smaller and more informal living spaces like the den or family room, you can opt for an upholstered coffee table that you can also use to prop your feet up while watching a movie or reading a good book. There are some coffee tables that also serve as storage spaces to hide remote controls and other small items. Style these coffee tables using lightweight or sturdy décor. For multi-use tables, you may drape a throw over them and corral decorative items on a tray to easily transfer them when in use.
