Raising a tiny human being at home always changes one's perspective. While we all love beautiful furniture, always make it a priority to evaluate your space for the safety of your growing family. Here are some stylish ways you can decorate your home to keep your little ones safe:

1. Keep breakables out of reach.

Little ones develop quickly and most start to crawl around their seventh month so it's best to eliminate possible hazards ahead and keep an eye on them as they go exploring. Store glass, ceramics, and other breakable items temporarily in the storage room or place them high on the shelves to keep away from curious baby and toddler's hands. As seen above, you can still host in style by keeping a pull-out bar cart on handit stores away breakables and looks very discreet, too.

Since breakables are out of the question, one option is to have wooden items as décor and hey, who said you couldn’t use wooden baby toys as décor? Some wooden toys are so adorable and are so well made that you won't mind having them peppered around the house. Plus it's an inconspicuous way of having toys in every corner of the house.

3. Rugs are not a problem.

Soft pile rugs and even woven rugs can also be helpful once the baby starts running around the house. Pro tip: Choose rugs from the same color palette or theme and mix them as you please, as seen in the photo above. It is also advisable to keep one under the changing table of the nursery. Just make sure that you have an anti-slip lining under the rugs to avoid slipping and to keep it clean by vacuuming or hiring a professional to deep-clean the rugs every couple of months to sanitize.

4. Secure your furniture.

While safer storage units have yet to be produced, there are cases and instances that antique dressers and other storage units have the tendency to tip over. To avoid this, secure dressers, bookshelves and other storage units to the wall. You can do it yourself but it's always better to have it done professionally. There are available anchor straps online but using brackets and attaching them inconspicuously on the wall will work just fine.

Safety brackets are available at amazon.com

5. Use corner protectors and baby proofing items.

It is essential to have baby proofing items like corner protectors, baby gates, and outlet covers to make sure that you go through anything that can pose a direct risk for you and the baby. Make sure that baby gates are installed in high-risk areas like stairs and doorways that lead to swimming pools and utilize corner protectors for tables. Keep cords from window blinds using cord cleats and use outlet covers to keep your child safe.

If you're moving into a new home and do not own pieces of furniture yet, you could choose pieces with soft edges or ones that are very plush. Large ottomans as living room centerpieces are a good alternative to glass coffee tables with sharp edges.

6. Space planning is key.

You should also consider the distance of pieces of furniture to the crib in the nursery. Keep rockers, seating pieces, and storage at least a meter away from the crib to avoid your child from reaching them to climb down or reach items on the storage.

7. Be cautious of plants at home.

8. Re-assess baby proofing.

While you’ve already prepared your home months before your due date, you will also need to re-examine your baby proofing a few months before your baby starts to learn how to crawl and scoot around the house. Make sure that dangerous items are out of reach and cabinet doors are locked as toddlers get more curious every day.
