The Duchess of Cambridge carries her bag in a certain way-here's why.

The Duchess of Cambridge has to travel regularly and meet a lot of people, and while one might think that would require a lot of hand-shaking, she seems to have adopted a very effective method of avoiding unnecessary contact: The duchess is almost always photographed carry a clutch.

Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette told Good Housekeeping that the duchess "holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward." In situations like this red carpet event, the clutch gives the duchess something to hold onto if she chooses not to extend her hand for a handshake. (Tradition dictates that one should wait until HRH offers her royal hand before attempting the physical greeting.)

The clutch offers a unifying element of style that the Duchess of Cornwall's umbrella, above, simply can't match. And like a man keeping his jacket buttoned, holding a clutch lengthens a woman's silhouette and makes her look taller.

So try it out—if nothing else, at least it'll mean you won't need to hit the Purell as often.
